WESTON BEACH RACE HITS SWANSEA BAY

Monday, June 20th, 2011

SWANSEA THE NEW HOME OF THE WESTON BEACH RACE

The future of the biggest off-road event on the UK calendar has been secured, with the news that the world famous Weston Beach Race will be staged in Swansea from 7-9 October 2011, onwards.

RHL Activities Limited, under whose stewardship the Weston Beach Race grew from a niche event attracting a few hundred competitors and a few thousand spectators into the biggest festival of off-road motorcycling in Britain, have reached agreement with Swansea Council to stage the Weston Beach Race in South Wales securing the future of this iconic event..

“While we were disappointed when it became apparent we’d have to move the Weston Beach Race from its traditional home, I’ve now realised that the move to Swansea will give the event a new lease of life,” declared Gareth Hockey, Managing Director of RHL Activities Limited.

“The relocation of the Weston Beach Race to the picturesque Bay of Swansea with its city status is parallel to the Welsh Assembly initiative of working hard to attract large scale major sporting and entertainment events to the area, .The event has been known to inject almost £3.5 million into the local economy and during this very difficult economic climate we are all in, it has been RHL’s focus to ensure the area chosen to relocate the Weston Beach Race would provide value for money and fantastic entertainment and leisure facilities for all its supporters.”

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism said“We have had a number of discussions with the organisers of the Weston Beach Race and are pleased that they will be relocating the event to Swansea Bay. This is an extremely popular event and Swansea Bay will provide a spectacular backdrop for it. It will provide a unique highlight on our events calendar and will help to extend the tourist season given that it is outside of the traditional holiday period. We look forward to working with the organisers and other agencies to ensuring a successful and safe event

The Beach Race will run under the auspices of the Auto Cycle Union, the only national governing body officially recognised by both the FIM and the UK Government.

“We have a good relationship with the ACU following two years working with them to stage the British Motocross Grand Prix,” explains Hockey. “For me, it was important that the ACU were involved with the event, as they are the only UK sanctioning body officially recognised by the FIM and, as such, are an organisation that local authorities feel confident working with. In fact, as North Somerset Council have mandated this year, many other local authorities now insist that the ACU is the sanctioning body for events held on council managed property.”

Watersport in llanelli, Wales

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Regarded as the axis of Llanelli Waterside the eighteen acre North Dock site is at the heart of the Millennium Coastal Park and overlooks Carmarthen Bay and the rejuvenated dock.
It therefore offers a unique waterside setting that’s sure to provide an appealing environment for a variety of uses.

Dragon 24 has transformed the dock edge and forms a business district that links into the town centre itself and right across Llanelli Waterside into developments at Burry Port and Delta Lakes.

The Discovery Centre (pictured above ) – a landmark building housing a restaurant, tourist information, ice cream parlour and meeting facilities – sits in the centre of the site with the promenade running alongside.
The unique building was purposely designed to excite people’s imaginations and makes no apologies for its bold appearance.

As its name suggests, the award-winning Discovery Centre is primarily a place where people can learn about the various parts of the Coastal Park and the many other delights that Carmarthenshire has to offer.
It is ideal to sit and watch the other half kitesurfing , wakeboarding or Stand up paddleboarding while you sip on a cappacino in the centers cafe!

The Pumphouse – an exciting plan to transform an eye-catching and historic grade II listed building on North Dock into a restaurant and chef academy is currently underway and scheduled for completion in spring 2011.

North Dock has evolved organically over the years generating a variety of development opportunities. It has steadily grown into a natural visitor destination with increased footfall year on year due to the many leisure activities North Dock offers.
The Kitesurfing potential in the Lougher estaury is untapped check the beach guide
Have your stag or Hen party with us an experience a special weekend you’ll not forget.

Swansea bay – Watersports center of Excellence

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Swansea Bay could soon be home to a Watersports Centre of Excellence!

The funding package of over £4m has been secured to help develop Swansea Marina, St Helen’s and Knab Rock and to refit the historic Olga pilot cutter vessel moored in the city’s Maritime Quarter.

The investment package has been put together with funding from the European Regional Development Fund,  The Welsh Assembly Government, Swansea Regeneration Area, Swansea Council, Bridgend Council, Mumbles Community Council, the Environment Agency and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.

It’s hoped the development of Swansea Bay as a Watersports Centre of Excellence will complement a proposal to regenerate Oystermouth Road into a european style boulevard and generate better links between the city centre and the waterfront.

Swansea European style boulevard

The centre will offer Watersports such as canoeing, kayaking, rafting, windsurfing, land yachting, stand up paddle boarding and kite-surfing which will all feature under the proposals.

Many people see the waterfront as Swansea’s best asset – but its real leisure and amenity value is not currently realised. By making it an active and well linked part of the wider City Centre the achievement of making our city the unique European waterfront destination becomes a step closer.

The plans would see cash invested in the St Helen’s area to develop access for all to the beach and a facility for beach and water sports. This would include toilets, wheelchair hire, changing and showering facilities, car parking improvements and a mechanism for accessing the water’s edge at low tide. There has even been talk of a cafe facility which would be greatly received by the Tens of Thousands of people who use the bay regularly.

Funds will also be pumped into the improvement of the slipway and visitor facilities at Knab Rock to accommodate world class sailing and catamaran events which currenty commence here A new pontoon with disabled access will be put in place at Swansea Marina to increase sailing and boating opportunities.

An Adrenaline Coast festival is also in the pipeline. It will largely focus on Porthcawl but will include long-haul competition linking it with the Swansea foreshore such as the Stand up paddleboarding.
There is a event planned for May 28/29th 2011 which include Free demo’s for families and children on Stand up paddle boards which is a fast emerging sport in the U.K.

Iwan Davies, Swansea Council’s Head of Culture and Tourism, said: “The development of Swansea Bay as a Watersports Centre of Excellence will add another great asset to the Swansea tourism product offer which will help to further strengthen the local tourism economy and potentially provide training and job opportunities in the tourism industry.

“Tourism is already a major economic asset to Swansea and these new developments will provide an excellent addition to what’s already available. We are delighted that we have been selected as one of only three approved Centres of Excellence in Wales.

Plas menai owned and run by the Sports Council for Wales, is a purpose-built centre with comfortable and well-equipped accommodation. The main residential complex has single and twin-bedded rooms, all with en-suite shower and WC, as well as tea-making facilities. Half the rooms overlook the Strait to Anglesey. The centre also has on-site ‘house’ accommodation which is ideal for clubs, schools and groups. This centre was developed through Grant funding and offers an array of watersports such as sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.

“The proposed watersports facilities and Olga refit will provide infrastructure that will further raise Swansea’s profile as a tourist destination and the clustering of waterfront activity will help deliver a vibrant waterfront.”

The schemes will be up and running by the end of 2014.
